Massage Therapy Descriptions

Abhyanga (Ayruvedic Massage)

This ancient massage is incredibly healing and indulgent.Shirodhara Smaller Preformed by a certified therapist, you lay on a specialized massage table. You are bathed in oil and deeply massaged. The oil is cleansing and transformational.

Ayurvedic massage was developed thousands of years ago in India and is still is a  common practice today. The idea behind the practice is that everything in the Universe is connected. The seen and unseen, the alive and dead, and the near and far. It is all intertwined. It is believed that the body and soul are connected and need to be healed in a connective way. The primary objective of Ayurvedic massage is to promote wellness rather than cure a specific disease.

Durring an Ayurvedic Massage you will lay on your back in approximately two to three inches of oil. The therapist will massage your body while pouring more warm oil from the Sheridan ( the oil pot hanging in the image).

This massage is designed to promote oneness and create a feeling of peace and understanding.  To experience global luxury right here in Cortland, contact our Wellness Coordinator.

7Stone Chakra Balancing Massage

7Stone Chakra Balancing Massage is a full body massage using crystals and gemstones warmed in essential oils massaged over the body. We are all made up of and are nourished by a continuous flow of life force. When it flows freely we experience joy, abundant health and vitality. However, in the natural course of living various blockages accumulate within this flow. These blockages create dark clouds within you and give rise to disharmony, pain and dis-ease. Gemstones radiate life force and with proper use can neutralize blockages within your being. As blockages dissolve, life force can shine through, enliven, nourish and heal you. Each type of gemstone expresses a different frequency and can therefore address different blockages and issues.

Sessions are uniquely tailored to each individual to bring into balance your energy systems/chakras. Sessions generally are 75 to 90 minutes long. Your energy centers/chakras are checked for balance and the stones and essential oils are chosen accordingly, i.e., for a blocked heart center we may employ a green fluorite stone or a pink rose quartz and bathe the stones in rose, geranium or an oil blend to address that chakra. After a full body massage using crystals and gemstones and warmed essential oils, the stones are laid over your 7 main energy centers and vibrational energy is used to further balance you.

Swedish Massage

The most common and well known of massage treatments, Swedish massage is designed to manipulate the soft tissue of the body in order to bring about increased circulation and a feeling of relaxed well being. The client remains draped throughout the treatment with only the areas being worked on exposed. Therapists use a combination of smooth flowing strokes, compression, vibration, and gentle rocking movements along with the application of oil or lotion to reduce friction on the skin.

The benefits of Swedish Massage include loosening of tight muscle restrictions, increased range of motion, reduced swelling from injury, relief from sore aching muscles, release of scar tissue adhesions, improved circulation and an overall feeling of relaxation.

Shiatsu Massage

Heard about the healthy benefits of massage therapy but still too timid to try it?  Dollarphotoclub_44183150Shiatsu (she-ought-zoo) might be just the right massage for you.  Performed on a special mat placed on the floor, this massage requires no oil or lotion and the client relaxes in loose fitting, comfortable clothing while the therapist applies thumb, finger and palm pressure to acupressure points along the body’s meridians or energy pathways.

Shiatsu was developed in Japan in the early 1900’s and is used to promote the flow of “qi” or energy throughout the body.  Although the main technique for this massage is finger pressure, the therapist will also use elbows and knees as well as stretching, joint rotation and percussion to unblock the body’s natural flow of energy and increase circulation.  Breathing is another technique the therapist will focus on to help the client achieve a state of deep relaxation.

What conditions can be treated by this therapy?  Headache, back pain, arthritis, insomnia, stress, depression.  Shiatsu benefits the body and mind by decreasing stress, increasing joint mobility, energy and circulation and boosting the immune system.  This is a wonderful therapy designed to release tension, promote mind/body balance and bring a renewed sense of well being.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue massage, not to be confused with deep pressure, uses medical massage techniques designed to target specific areas of chronic pain, muscle tension, and/or soft tissue injury.  These specific and deeper techniques focus on lengthening and spreading the muscle fibers to dramatically loosen muscle tissue for increased flexibility. This may also include A.I.S. (Active Isolated Stretching).

A.I.S. (Active Isolated Stretching)

Active Isolated Stretching was developed by Aaron Mattes to encourage proper body movement. The Mattes Method of muscle and fascial release provides effective dynamic facilitated stretch of major muscle groups.

More important, it provides functional physiological restoration of muscle, tendons, vertebrae, ligaments and joints which leads to healthier superficial and deep fascial tissue structures. AIS can be a beneficial component of massage, especially when treating those receiving chiropractic care.

AIS is a most effective method of warming up and stretching to increase flexibility. When your joints have full range of motion, they enhance the body’s ability to succeed in a variety of exercises/ movements without risk of injury.

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy is available by request with the massage services. Therapists individualize treatments using a variety of pure essential oils and blends that contain only natural ingredients. Massage and essential oils both relax and revitalize to create a sense of renewal.

Reflexology

Pressure points of the feet, corresponding to specific organs of the body, are massaged to relieve stress, release toxins, and promote healing throughout the entire body.

Side by Side MassageSide-by-Side Swedish Massage

While two therapists work in tandem, you can enjoy all of the benefits of a Swedish massage while sharing the experience with your friend or family member side-by-side in a room for two.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage is a specialty massage that uses smooth, heated stones. The stones are various shapes and sizes of basalt rock which absorb and retain heat. The heat from the stones is transferred to your muscles and helps them release more quickly than in traditional massage. This form of massage is deeply soothing and relaxing.

During a treatment the therapist uses traditional strokes of Swedish massage while holding a heated stone. The therapist may place stones on specific areas such as acupressure points along your spine, in your palms, or even between your toes.

Massage oils are incorporated into the treatment as well. Be sure to mention if you have inflammation or muscle injury as hot stones would be contraindicated for those areas. Also, let your therapist know if the stones feel too warm or the pressure too intense.

This massage is a great stress reliever. It promotes the release of toxins, relieves pain, improves circulation, and soothes the psyche. Health conditions that have been helped from a Hot Stone Massage include muscular aches and pains, back pain, MS, arthritis, fibromyalgia, stress, anxiety, circulatory problems, insomnia, and depression.

Pregnancy MassagePregnant receiving back massage

With both Mom and Baby in mind, this gentle and relaxing massage can help to relieve low back and joint pain, support ligament changes, increase circulation, and reduce swelling. It also gives Mom help with much needed rest.

Reiki

Reiki is a type of energy therapy. It is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. This subtle and gentle energy work is powerful on all levels.

The therapist uses a series of flowing hand movement above or on the client’s body connecting with the natural energy system. This process provides a channeling of energy that can restore balance in the energy system to enhance the body’s ability to heal virtually every illness or malady.

Further, there are often other benefits from a treatment that include relaxation and feelings of peace, grounding, and well being; pain relief; a boost to the immune system; a release of blocked emotions; and amplified personal energy levels and creativity. Reiki works well as a complement to other medical or therapeutic techniques.

Sports Massage

Whether a weekend warrior or a professional athlete, sports massage can help to prevent as well as relieve muscle cramping, pain, and joint soreness. More than that, it can help promote flexibility and balance which aids in peak performance.

Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.

But you don’t have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The massage therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area.

What Happens During Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy or myofascial release to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles), loosen areas of muscle tension and increase range of motion.

There are four types of sports massages:

  • pre-event sports massage — a short, stimulating massage 15 – 45 minutes before the event. It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.
  • post-event sports massage — given within an hour or two of the event, to normalize the body’s tissues.
  • restorative sports massage — given during training to allow the athlete to train harder and with less injury.
  • rehabilitative sports massage — aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to health.

When Should I Get A Sports Massage?

A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem — a tender knee from running, for example. The therapist generally focuses in on the problem area — a sore shoulder or pulled hamstring, rather than giving you a thorough full-body massage.

Thai Yoga Massage

Thai MassageThai Yoga Massage is performed on the floor in loose and comfortable clothing. In receiving Thai Yoga Massage one is also receiving the benefits of the practice of yoga.

This technique has been described as assisted Hatha yoga. A Thai Yoga Massage also incorporates martial arts moves, rhythmic motion, palming and thumbing along energy lines, gentle stretching, and breathwork, creating a slow, flowing “dance” around and with the recipient’s body.

In addition to stretching and tonifying the muscles, Thai Yoga Massage improves circulation, relieves muscular tension and spasm, helps expedite metabolism, boosts the immune system, and balances the body energetically, inducing a calm mental state. This practice provides the recipient with both a physical and energetic massage.

Spa Foot Treatment

“All feet are born beautiful. Then life takes its toll as our feet lead us forward.”

Send your feet on a relaxing retreat. This Facial for the Feet uses a system of nature-based products rich in botanicals, marine alpha hydroxy acids, seaweed extracts, mineral salts and natural sugar crystals to refresh and rejuvenate the feet.

The experience starts with an aromatherapeutic Foaming Sea Soak foot bath enhanced with Sea Rocks containing Dead Sea salts and vitamin E to soften and hydrate. Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oils refresh and cleanse the feet.

Next, a special scrub of natural sugar crystals and alpha hydroxy acid complex is used to gently exfoliate dry and callused areas. A Sea Serum and buffers are used on extra tough areas.

Now your feet are ready for the mask. The marine masque with menthol crystals that refresh aching, tired feet is applied over the entire foot. You will feel the tingle of your feet being softened and hydrated for the next 7 to 10 minutes.

Saving the best for last, your feet will love the massage. Awww.

Finally, enjoy your new socks and your “new” feet!

Hand and Foot Paraffin

Hand Paraffin TreatmentTherabath warm paraffin wax treatments for the hands or feet are fast-acting heat therapy which soften and moisturize for healthier feeling skin. After the paraffin therapy your skin not only feels softer but you may experience relief from arthritic joint pain, relaxation of stiff muscles, and hydration for chronic dryness whether from the weather or repeated hand-washing.

How does it work? Paraffin wax can absorb and retain a great amount of heat. When your hands or feet are dipped into the liquid paraffin, this heat is then transferred to the skin as the wax begins to solidify. This warmth is not only comforting but it opens pores and increases circulation in the skin. As an added treat, the paraffin is gently scented with a hint of lavender or wintergreen.

For tired, overworked hands or feet this couldn’t feel better. For cold hands and feet, this treatment couldn’t feel more warming.

Sole Revival Footease

Enhancing a regular massage with this additional foot treatment will give your feet a welcome relief. Intensive moisturizing lotion is applied to the feet which are then wrapped in a heated Body Sense Foot Pack. After the feet have been warmed and moisturized, they are refreshed with a soothing massage.
